rough analysis

there are three remarkable features about the sloterplas area which have become important for the design:

1. the position:
the sloterplas is set in the west of amsterdam and is one of the most easily accessible recreational areas of the city. the urban structure around it differs recognizably from the rest of town.

2. the sequential spaces around the lake:
by taking a walk around the lake, one can experience a number of spatial sequences of different character and quality.

3. the functional demands:
for a suburban setting, there is a great number and variety of functional demands and forces.

concept

the main idea is to work with the sequential pattern around the lake. in order to emphasize the importance of the site in relation to the lake, the sequences become comparatively narrow strips whose nature can be easily experienced by moving through them. the sequences will differ in size, surface and function, they are:

1. urban space
2. peat garden
3. recreational spaces
4. park

the routing through the site will be connected to the de nijl development [thus, of course, the city centre], the path around the lake and a newly emphasized north-south connection between osdorpplein and a smaller subcentre south. a connection with green zones south of the site will also be made.
