pavillon concept

apart from the purpose of informing about the AUP and future events around the Sloterplas, the pavillon mainly serves as an entry gate to the south bank area. thus it had to be penetrable as much as possible. only the necessary connections to the ground level have been made [auditorium and cafe access, hall] enabling all three paths to continue underneath the building.
another theme is the location of the pavillion right next to the shoreline [earth - water]. the metaphor of transformation is chosen to documentate this situation. the building transforms from massive /  cubist to light / round towards the Sloterplas

plan

the pavillon is accessed through the hall. the hall itself forms an autonomous object which is inserted into the long stretched shape of the pavillon itself. this alien, special nature is emphasized by the bright green glazing of the hall. in accordance with the transformation metaphor the hall faces the shoreline with around shape. in the transformation context the auditorium serves as an amchor or root out of which the building slowly grows and dissolves.

the programme has been accomodated rather simply: the southern part of the pavillon is used for exhibition areas and the auditorium, the offices are located in the back of the hall, next to them [in the northern part] are the library and the chart room. the northernmost part of the pavillon forms the cafe, directly facing the sloterplas and providing a great view. the cafe’s terrace is located on the platform in the water and can only be accessed by the cafe making it a rather special place to be. the staircase leading to the platform is directed towards Osdorpplein, while the platform itself is directed towards the Sloterpark beacon.

facade design

the main design idea here was the transformation theme, too. as in the static vs. dynamic project a superimposition of rhythms proved useful. the facade transforms from closed to open towards the water. at first, a solely functional facade was designed [square windows], then an accellerating pattern of narrow windows was superimposed. in the facade of the cafe the pattern changes: the width of the windows which are now next to each other increases.
